Hi, my name is Anita Pitock, and I’m a nurse and an attorney at Lowenthal & Abrams, Injury Attorneys, and I also have a family member in a nursing home.
Recently I read an interesting statistic, which really disturbed me. It said that 91% of the nursing homes in the United States don’t have enough staff to take care of our family members? What can we do to help take care of our family members? Well we can be an advocate. Most importantly we can be there. Make a presence let them know that we’re watching out for our family members. It is really important to ask questions. If there is something that concerns you ask them why something happened, how something happened and don’t stop until you get an answer.
Most importantly, if you believe that your family member has been abused, report it. Put a call in to the nursing home administrator, put a call in to the ombudsman, call the department of state, call a lawyer, but call somebody.
Take a stand with me. It’s not just the elderly. It’s our mothers, it’s our fathers, it’s our husbands and wives.
