We’ve previously posted about the dangers of distracted driving. This recent, real-life example, shows how one split-second choice can damage lives irreparably.
A Georgia teen, “allegedly driving over 100 mph and using Snapchat’s speed filter,” slammed into another car, causing a severe crash. The Snapchat filter she was using lets people show how fast they are currently going, while posting a photo. Allegedly, Christal McGee, was driving her car over 100 mph in a 55 mph zone, in order to get a photo of her speed when she crashed into another vehicle. Even after the crash, the teen posted more Snapchats while in an ambulance and covered in blood, according to the complaint filed.
The victim of the crash, Maynard Wentworth, has suffered severe and permanent brain injuries as a result. The accident also rendered him “unable to work and suffering from financial losses” because he can no longer walk without a walker or wheelchair. He and his wife are suing both McGee and Snapchat, for their losses.
McGee is now in jail and charged with a felony of “causing serious injury by vehicle.” She has been charged with three misdemeanors as well.
McGee and Snapchat have both denied that the Snapchat app was in use at the time of the crash.
Both Mcgee and Wentworth are lucky to be alive after the severe crash they endured. Unfortunately, many accidents end in death. If Mcgee had killed someone as a result of her distracted driving, she could have been charged with vehicular homicide. Now, she will probably be responsible for paying medical expenses, property damage, and physical suffering to the victim in this crash.
Before you check your phone while driving, remember that your life, and the lives of those around you, are more important than snapping a selfie.
