Why Are More Car & Pedestrian Accidents Happening in Philadelphia?

Gas prices being lowered is a great thing, right? Well, it may have a few downfalls as well. More people able to afford driving on the roads, means more chances for accidents to occur. According to the Philadelphia Police, fatal auto-pedestrian accidents in Philadelphia are up by a shocking 50%. The captain of the Accident Investigation Division, John Wilczynski, explained that distraction seemed to be the major cause of these accidents, with both distracted drivers and distracted pedestrians at fault. He also said that Philadelphia Police have “already seen 17” of these fatal accidents so far this year.

You Could Face Jail Time

When an auto-pedestrian accident is caused due to jaywalking, the driver may not be considered at fault. The entirety of the circumstances, including the negligence of the pedestrian will be considered. However, if you think that you’ve hit someone while driving, it is critical that you stop and call the police. Failure to do so can result in serious criminal charges. Don’t risk being charged with a hit and run. Even if you are at fault, leaving the scene is an additional crime which generally will increase the penalties that you can face. Remember, calling 911 can be the difference between life or death for the pedestrian.

How to Avoid an Auto-Pedestrian Accident

The best way to avoid an accident as either a driver or pedestrian, is to limit your distractions. Put your phone down when driving or crossing the street, and be careful to examine your surroundings from every angle.
