For as long as we can remember, hospitals have been seen as “safe” spaces where patients can rely on medical professionals and staff for the vital treatment needed to recover from illnesses, injuries, or chronic conditions requiring ongoing care. However, the unprecedented challenges introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 have reshaped these environments, calling into question many aspects of the “safe” hospital experience we once knew.

Today, many hospitals—especially in densely populated areas—continue to grapple with the fallout from extreme overcrowding in emergency rooms and ICUs. Persistent ICU bed shortages now raise serious concerns about exposure to infectious diseases for those in need of urgent medical treatment. Though healthcare providers themselves work tirelessly to manage these conditions, the risk of COVID-19 exposure remains a constant threat to patients. Additionally, some administrative decisions have complicated efforts to ensure patient safety, while the pandemic has led many to delay or forego essential medical care altogether.

At Lowenthal & Abrams, Injury Attorneys, we find it essential to bring attention to the critical issues of medical malpractice and hospital safety. Preventable medical errors continue to cause harm to countless patients every year, tragically contributing to a high rate of deaths nationwide. Through this scholarship, we aim to foster a conversation about hospital safety and explore meaningful solutions. Raising awareness is the first step toward creating safer healthcare environments, and our team is committed to highlighting these challenges and seeking improvements.

Reflect on a time when you or someone you know was in the hospital. Were there aspects of that experience that could have been improved? How might new policies or laws help hospitals provide safer care? We invite you to share your thoughts in response to the question: “What law or laws would you create to make hospitals safer?” We are offering a $1,000 scholarship to the student who proposes the most compelling idea. Details for the scholarship are provided below.

The deadline to apply for the 2025 Hospital Safety Awareness Scholarship is May 31, 2025.
