Do You Have One of the Deadliest Jobs in the United States?

Imagine going to work every morning knowing that today could be the last time. Sound crazy? Surprisingly, many jobs in America are so dangerous that this should be the thought on some of our minds.

Varying factors make some jobs significantly more dangerous than others. For instance, occupations that require strenuous activity and physical labor are, of course, far more dangerous than jobs where employees sit at desks during their work day. Even worse, some of these jobs send workers to locations where access to hospitals and emergency care is limited. Other jobs that require transportation sometimes result in a fatal injury when vehicle accidents occur.

In 2014, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released a Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, which showed a grand total of 4,821 fatal work injuries that year alone. Of this number, 1,984 fatal injuries resulted due to transportation incidents, the leading cause of fatal injury on the job. The second largest cause was falls, slips, and trips, with a total of 818 fatally injured. Time magazine released an article showing the most dangerous jobs in America. Continue reading to discover the top 5 deadliest jobs and to find out if yours is one of them.

What Are the 5 Most Dangerous Jobs?

  • Logging Workers – Logging workers jobs consist of cutting down trees with hand-held power chain saws or mobile felling machines. These types of workers operate machinery, climb trees, and fasten steel cables around logs. Loggers work outside, often in isolation or inclement weather. In 2014, there were 110.9 fatal injuries per every 100,00 logging workers.

  • Fishers and Related Fishing Workers – These types of jobs require workers to work outdoors and for long hours, often under dangerous conditions. Approximately 80 percent of fishing related injuries result from water vehicle transportation injuries. Fishers are at risk of drowning, getting caught in equipment, or shipwrecks.
  • Aircraft Pilots and Flight Engineers – These workers must fly and operate airplanes and other types of aircraft, in order to transport either people or cargo. According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, human error is the leading cause of death for aircraft pilots.
  • Roofers – Roofers replace, fix, and install roofs which can be extremely dangerous due to the amount of physical labor. The height at which roofing is performed can lead to hazardous falls for workers.

Since summer months are the busiest for roofers, they are often required to work in the blistering heat, as well.

  • Refuse and Recyclable Material Collectors – These workers have to operate heavy vehicles and stop them frequently on the side of the road to collect waste. Many accidents occur involving speeding drivers on the road who refuse to stop and end up injuring a worker. The workers themselves often have difficulty operating the trucks because they are so large. These jobs are low-paying but highly dangerous.
