You do need an attorney to represent you when you apply for social security disability benefits, because it is a court system, a government court system, and you want to be sure that you get those benefits. If you do it on your own and you have to submit medical evidence on your own, without legal training as to what specifically the laws are and the statutes are, then you run the risk of losing your claim. It is better to pay an attorney a contingent fee agreement, a percentage of what you win, instead of not paying an attorney and losing.
