The best way to stop nursing home abuse from occurring is when you first are placing your loved one into a nursing home. Look at how many nurses are there to care for your family member. Look at, is the nursing home clean. I call it the smell test. Go into the nursing home. How does it smell? Does it smell dirty? You wouldn’t want your home to smell that way, so you certainly don’t want where your family member is gonna be.
Once your family member is in the nursing home, then you have to…you have to be an advocate. You have to be there for your family member. Come in and visit. Don’t come in and visit every day at lunch time. Come in at different times. Don’t tell anybody you are coming, show up unannounced. When you see red flags. If there’s a change in the personality if you see bruises that weren’t there. Don’t sit back and assume that that’s ok. Ask questions. Tell them that you are concerned about it. Go to somebody and say look, why did this occur. By being an active participant in the health care process you are gonna help prevent any abuse from happening to your loved one.
